“Experience the Chills and Thrills of Spending a Night at the Haunted Buxton Inn – Are You Brave Enough to Stay?”

The Buxton Inn

The Buxton Inn is one of those charming little hotels, that inspires romance in its visitors. Known for fine dining and serving as a bridal haven for weddings, it has quite a storied history. As you drive through the storybook town of Granville, the cat-adorned sign greets you when the pink-clad building pops into sight. It is gushing with ambiance before you even step foot inside, and the grounds are meticulously maintained. When you enter the lobby, it feels like stepping back in time and is brought forth, even more, when you are handed an actual key to open your door.

History of the Inn & Tavern

Built in 1812, this location started life as a popular stagecoach stop simply named, The Tavern. The property has served as many different businesses, but it has never closed its doors to guests! Along with being a post office, inn for stagecoach drivers, and a generally hospitable spot, it has also seen its share of controversy. The tavern served as a notable location for the Underground Railroad, served up secret drinks during prohibition, and even had a speakeasy tucked away. It wasn’t until 1865 when the tavern’s final namesake, Major Horton Buxton stepped in to purchase the business, and thus The Buxton Inn that we know today was born.

Some Guests Never Leave

The Inn has some exceptional history, and even if you aren’t into the haunted side of things you still need to check it out, for it’s highly rated restaurant and its beauty alone. But, if you’re here I’m guessing the spooky side of things is what drew you in! Naturally, a location that has such history is bound to have some spirits that chose to stick around. Former owners, an inn keeper, and a cat are said to roam the building pretty freely. If you want to experience the paranormal happenings for yourself, you really don’t have to look far. Both the original owner Orrin Granger and Major Buxton like to watch as unsuspecting guests check in for the night. There has been several witness accounts. Some have even reported footsteps behind them, and hearing their name called while no one was in sight.

Experience the Paranormal

The Inn has a total of 25 rooms, but two are the standouts for those who seek the paranormal. Rooms 7 & 9 are both highly active, with reports of encounters in both. Room 7 is said to have a darker entity who shows themselves in shadowy form; While Room 9 was the home of former innkeeper Bonnie Bounell and has a much more tame backstory. She often appears to guests wearing blue, which was her favorite color. The front desk has many guests asking about the nice woman in blue who spoke to them in their room the night prior, only to find out they’d inadvertently met Bonnie. For the bonus, in either room many guests have reported feeling a cat jumping into bed to curl up with them for the night!

The Basement is another hotspot where workers have said they often hear whispers in the dark corners of the past. The Underground Railroad, Stagecoach Era & Prohibition memories live on and guests have often felt as though they are being watched. (Call to see if this are is open before you book – Due to Covid, it was not open for our stay.)
